Paper Arts

The seventh and eighth grade have been working on Notan and pop-up cut paper, respectively. Notan is a Japanese cut paper art form that emphasizes symmetry, reflection, and the relationship between positive and negative space. Pop-ups, well, are pretty self-explanatory.

Below you can find a great example of Notan (well, this student really surpassed Notan and went into uncharted super-amazingly-awesome-cut-paper territory), and a few great examples from the eighth grade.

Notan (this piece is 3 by 2 feet)
A beautiful example of the power of cut paper combined with light and shadow. And to top it off, this student wrote a beautiful explanation of the symbolism and meaning in his piece.
